Volkswagen AG's corporate headquarters decided to fundamentally renovate the listed 14-storey high-rise building, which was completed in 1959, to meet contemporary requirements while at the same time restoring the original building structure as far as possible. New functions were implemented in the building, such as a spacious showroom, new entrance buildings and innovative office and conference areas. With the refurbishment, the VW Group headquarters pursued a high standard of energy efficiency combined with very good climatic comfort. The greatest challenge was to upgrade the existing building to the highest possible degree in line with its listed status with highly effective structural thermal insulation in order to achieve the desired user-friendly climate conditions. Müller-BBM Building Solutions advised the planning architects comprehensively in detail, e.g. a combination of interior and exterior insulation measures was developed for the various façade components. In order to achieve a high level of climatic comfort in the new, largely fully glazed and filigree entrance buildings, extensive thermal simulations were carried out in order to derive appropriate optimization measures.
