The Marienheim Catholic kindergarten was originally built with two group rooms and was extended in 1987 to include a further group room and a multi-purpose room. Due to existing structural and safety deficiencies as well as a lack of space, a general refurbishment of the existing buildings became necessary. In the course of the refurbishment, a gymnastics room, a creative room and various ancillary rooms were added to the existing building. The former multi-purpose room is now used as a "children's bistro".As part of the refurbishment measures, a building physics survey of the existing external components was first carried out. All building components in the old building were upgraded in terms of energy efficiency. Together with the new construction planning, the requirements of EnEV 2014 for the maximum permissible primary energy demand were undercut by approx. 50 %. All group rooms and the gymnastics room were fitted with sound-absorbing installations on the ceiling and walls to reduce the background noise level and increase speech intelligibility. This has significantly improved the living, playing and learning conditions for the children and teachers.
