The existing building housed the Bundeswehr's specialist medical center in Kempten until 2015. After a period of vacancy, the conversion into a residential building with 53 residential units and 45 student apartments was completed in just 18 months. During the conversion, the project participants placed great emphasis on preserving the existing building structure with its organic formations. Formerly unused parts of the building, such as the attic, were completely renovated to provide additional, much-needed living space.

In the renovation, efforts were made to integrate old constructions, such as the supports and beams of the old wooden roof, into the apartments. Stairwells, elevators, additional windows, and spacious balconies facing the inner park complement the building complex. Upon completion, compact 2-bedroom apartments, family units, and high-quality gallery floors offer suitable living spaces for various user groups and generations. By integrating the project into the so-called "Kempten Model," affordable housing was created on the outskirts of the city center.

Müller-BBM Building Solutions was involved early on in the building acoustics survey. Extensive on-site sound measurements provided a cross-section of the existing constructions and acoustic standards in the existing building. Based on the findings and results of the existing measurements, the building components were redesigned or strengthened to meet the requirements for sound insulation. This allowed for a contemporary living standard to be achieved with reasonable construction effort.
