Inaugurated in 1913, the Konzerthaus in Vienna comprised three concert halls in which performances could take place simultaneously without any acoustical disturbance: the Große Saal (seating 1,865), the Mozartsaal (seating 704) and the Schubertsaal (seating 366). Between 1998 and 2001, the venue was completely renovated under the direction of the architect Hans Puchhammer, and a new concert hall (Beriosaal) seating approx. 400 was added.

The Konzerthaus in Vienna with its three halls counts among the best concert houses worldwide. Although in the course of the renovation, new technical installations had to be included for airconditioning and lighting as well as audio-visual media technology and security installations, the special acoustics in the historical halls had to be preserved and even improved. In this connection, the very long reverberation in the low-frequency range also was attenuated.

All measures were carefully integrated into the existing structure. In cooperation with the architects, wall and floor structures were designed to meet all acoustic requirements and also to preserve the visible historical appearance – with great success: after the renovation, musicians, conductors as well as the audience unanimously praised the acoustics.
