From 1996 – 2004, the Athens concert hall known as the Megaron was extended and turned into a cultural and congress center setting international standards as to size and functionality. In addition to the symphony concert and chamber music hall already completed in 1991, the center houses the “Alexandra Trianti“ opera hall seating 1,750 in which also ballet and other types of musical performances or major conventions take place. The “Nikos Skalkotas Hall“ seating 400 is a venue for concerts, cinema shows and conferences. The large banquet hall is used for shows, banquets as well as for conferences. The unique music library with its continuously increasing stock of music literature and recordings is also included in the Megaron.

A special feature of the extension is that all rooms are located underground beneath the publicly accessible "Concert Hall Garden" so as not to reduce the city's green spaces. The result is a building complex whose halls impress with their individual acoustic quality tailored to their respective uses. From the opera hall with its highly praised natural acoustics to the banquet hall, where the sound quality comes into its own. And although some of the event areas and music rehearsal rooms are directly adjacent to each other in terms of short distances for users and visitors, good structural sound insulation guarantees parallel use without mutual acoustic interference.
