The Festival and Congress Hall in Bregenz, reinaugurated in July 2006, was lauded in the opening speech as the “third most beautiful congress hall in the world which can also play the lead role with respect to music”. During a construction period of 10 months only, the building first erected in 1980 was completely renovated. In cooperation with the Dietrich | Untertrifaller team of architects from Bregenz, Müller-BBM Building Solutions designed an acoustically transparent enclosure in the form of a metal mesh ceiling, realized as a stainless steel wire mesh. Consequently, it was possible to achieve the maximum volume with the hall‘s given basic dimensions, leading to an increase in the reverberation time of approx. 0.5 s as compared to the previous situation. For concert performances, an orchestra shell variable as to size and shape can be erected on the podium. Since the shell consists of separate elements, it may perfectly be adjusted to large as well as small orchestras. Above the orchestra pit, Müller-BBM Building Solutions designed reflectors ensuring an optimum direction of sound to the auditorium. Located behind the acoustically transparent metal mesh ceiling, these reflectors remain invisible to the audience.
