The new building for the State Church Archive in Nuremberg was designed by architects von Gerkan Marg und Partner and built on the grounds of the Evangelical Lutheran Church on Wöhrder See. In addition to public areas such as a reading room and an event hall, the building houses administrative offices and around 4,700 m² of storage space.

The new building was constructed according to the latest findings in archive construction. The protection of the archives was the top priority. Thanks to the building structure's favorable design in terms of building physics, an optimal and stable indoor climate is created for the archive material with minimal technical effort. A passive air-conditioning concept was implemented that completely dispenses with active cooling of the stacks. A very small ventilation system (0.2 times the room air exchange rate) supplies the storage rooms with fresh air and is primarily used for humidity regulation and winter heating. Energy-intensive supply air treatment, such as humidification or dehumidification, is completely dispensed with: the ventilation system is only operated when the outdoor climate is conducive to the indoor climate. This results in very low operating costs. In order to be able to dispense with room cooling in the offices as well, particularly exposed rooms were equipped with latent heat storage units. In the public areas, favorable room and building acoustics conditions were created for a pleasant and quiet atmosphere.
