After approximately five years of construction, the museum complex on Untermainkai, one of the two locations of the Jewish Museum Frankfurt, was reopened in 2020. It consists of the historically preserved and renovated Rothschild Palace, which houses the new permanent exhibition on Frankfurt’s Jewish history from 1800 to the present across three floors. Additionally, the palace includes a seminar room, a children's workshop, and administrative offices. The new Lichtbau, designed by Staab Architekten, is characterized by the contrast between exposed concrete and wooden paneling. Alongside its spacious atrium, it accommodates temporary exhibitions, a public library, a kosher deli, a museum shop, and cloakroom facilities. In accordance with the specifications set by the City of Frankfurt, the extension was planned as a passive house. Furthermore, special requirements concerning security technology, burglary, and explosion protection had to be considered for this museum building. Acoustic measures in the lecture and library rooms ensure high speech intelligibility. In the listed Rothschild Palace, thermal upgrades were carried out on all structural components of the attic, including the installation of new box-type windows with a triple-layered textile light and sun protection system, as well as interior insulation of the historical masonry using capillary-active calcium silicate insulation. Hygrothermal indoor climate simulations were conducted to assess the necessary conservation-related climate parameters, and guidelines for air conditioning systems were developed accordingly.
