The Max Planck Institute for Brain Research is located on the Riedberg campus in Frankfurt am Main. The complex consists of two compact structures - the institute building and the technical center. A spacious, central communication and access hall with open staircases and galleries connects the two structures. Room boxes set into the entrance hall are formed on the glass façade and are used for joint meetings or lectures. The four-storey institute building is divided into a pure office wing on the first floor and a highly installed laboratory wing with user-specific areas for biochemical and physical laboratories on the other floors. In addition to other laboratory areas, the technical center contains rooms for animal husbandry in particular.

A passive climate concept was developed for the entrance hall with its high-quality lounge areas and validated using thermal simulations. The summer climate conditions in the meeting rooms and offices of the institute building were also examined and optimized by means of calculations. The walkways and staircases in the entrance hall were fitted with low-vibration load-bearing systems in lightweight steel construction. Ceiling structures were planned that also took into account the building acoustics requirements for the conference boxes and the lecture hall. In the basement of the institute building, measures were planned for the structure-borne noise-decoupled storage of the scanning electron microscope and for the sound insulation of the installation room.
