A special education center with a sports hall, therapy area, all-day care and a home was built on a former barracks site in Chemnitz. Children with physical and multiple disabilities will find learning, play and therapy conditions ideally tailored to their needs. The buildings are characterized by state-of-the-art, needs-based equipment, generous space and light conditions and an architecture that opens up to the surroundings with many outdoor connections and open spaces.
The client's objective for the specialist building physics planning was to significantly undercut the requirements of EnEV 2009. Thanks to the high-quality energy design of the building envelope and a favorable district heating supply, it was possible to undercut the limit value by more than 20 %, despite a high proportion of glazing. The therapy pool with water and air temperatures of more than 30 °C placed particular demands on thermal comfort and condensation protection. Great importance was attached to a high level of sound insulation and particularly good audibility not only in the classrooms and the three-court sports hall, but also in the spacious circulation and access zones, the foyers and the therapy area. In the home, balanced sound insulation was planned between the common rooms and the bedrooms, offering the children opportunities to retreat and rest without isolating them from the residential community and the caregivers.
